COMMUNITY GROUPS
Center and community
work together for change
by Jan Cline
Cleveland-Wouldn't it be great if queer people could legally get married? Wouldn't it be great if you could come out at work, without the fear of being fired or harassed? I'd like to see gays and lesbians able to serve in the military and also able to tell when asked. And wouldn't it be the best if my partner and I could hold hands and maybe even embrace or kiss in public spaces without the fear of harassment and physical harm?
Do any of these questions sound familiar? Did you ever ask yourself, "How can I help make an impact on these issues?"
North Olmsted, Lakewood and Westlake now have gay-inclusive fair housing laws. Our community is coming together to create positive changes.
The Center is right here, at the center of our community, to provide this web-like fabric that connects all of us to each other; lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people,
The Center
The Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center will host Cleveland's first Marriage Expo for our community, on June 14. We regularly partner with national organizations working at the state and national level to implement positive change. Our volunteers guide youth in making appropriate decisions about their orientation and how it fits into their growth to adulthood.
Since 1989 we've directed queer sensitivity training for police in Cleveland. We interact with political representatives to encourage fair employment and public accommodation practices; a right that lesbian and gay citizens within Cleveland city limits now have. The suburbs of Cleveland Heights,
and straight supporters. We are working on these issues, and others, to foster a safer and more full life for all of us.
